It's that time again! Time to head for the shore to bury your toes in the warm sand and your face in a great book! Here are my suggestions for hot summer reading:
Start with a cool read on the beach with Theodore Taylor's The Cay. Every time a summer storm approaches you'll think of Phillip and Timothy and Stew Cat, battling the hurricane on their tiny island as World War II wages around them. One of my all-time favorites! Check it out HERE!
Looking for something a little cooler? Try Bo at Ballard Creek by Kirkpatrick Hill. It's the 1920s, and Bo was headed for an Alaska orphanage when she won the hearts of two tough gold miners who set out to raise her, enthusiastically helped by all the kind people of the nearby Eskimo village. Icy fun on a hot summer day! A Scott O'Dell Award winner. Read more HERE!
How about a little murder mystery? Try Dead End in Norvelt, a Newbery Award winner by Jack Gantos. This novel is about an incredible two months for the author as a young boy, whose plans for vacation excitement are shot down when he is "grounded for life" by his feuding parents, and whose nose spews blood at every little shock he gets. As the summer heats up, Jack begins a strange adventure involving molten wax, Eleanor Roosevelt, twisted promises, a homemade airplane, Girl Scout cookies, a man on a trike, a dancing plague, voices from the past, Hells Angels . . . and possibly murder. Click HERE to find out more!
Need some more ideas? Try these: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Out of the Dust by Karen Hess, or another favorite of mine, Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. Summer is also the perfect time to enjoy Scott O'Dell's tale about the lost girl, Karana, in Island of the Blue Dolphins.
And, of course, don't forget my new novel, A Time To Be Brave! Order it now through this website!
Enjoy a nice, long summer with lots of good books. Let me know which story becomes your new summer favorite!
